September is Disaster Preparedness Month!

We’ve had an unusually mild summer this year, and most people are already thinking about autumn and the upcoming holidays.  What they are NOT thinking about is preparing for disaster.  Yet disaster preparedness is exactly what should be on our minds at this time of year!

California firefighters contain more than half of wildfire

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
· Firefighters have 65 percent of the blaze contained
· The fire in Kern County has burned more than 8,000 acres
· One home has been destroyed; residents evacuated
(CNN) -- Firefighters in southern California have contained 65 percent of a massive wildfire that has burned more than 8,000 acres, officials said Thursday.
Fifteen fire engines, 10 helicopters and 34 fire crews worked to contain the fire in Kern County , California , according to an official update.
Crews were also in place to protect homes and other structures along with air support.
On Wednesday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Kern County .
About 1,500 firefighters were battling the blaze, a Kern County Fire Department spokesman said.
The fire has destroyed at least one home, threatens many more and prompted evacuations, the governor's office said.

How Much Life Insurance is Enough?

If you died today, would your family be destitute in a few years, comfortable, still have the family home or were they forced to sell below market value? Good questions, what are your answers? In my 18 years experience in insurance Life Insurance has always been that one line of insurance that most people don't like to talk about. Why? In the last 18 years no one has ever complained to me about have too much life insurance, Nor have they ever wished they didn't have it when I delivered a large check during a difficult time.

Figuring out how much life insurance you need can be difficult and even a little bit scary. But that's why I'm here, to help you come up with a plan that works for you and your family. Over insure, and good money is wasted. Money that can be used to invest. Under insure, and your family may really have a traumatic time, a newly stay at home mom may find it necessary to return to work and place your new born in child care, breaking a promise you made as a parent and now no longer have a choice to keep.

Biggest obstacle's I've seen over the years, I have coverage through my employer so it's all taken care of. Then at age 51 changed or lost their job and can't afford a plan right now. Each year the price will only get higher, and if you have any medical problems the price will go up, that's if you still qualify, some don't. That's a hard conversation to have.

Term Life or Universal Life Insurance?

Term Life Insurance: The simplest form of Life coverage, term insurance is no more than a matter of premiums and a death benefit. The name fits since term insurance's span of coverage lasts only a specified period of time; if the insured dies while the policy is in force, the death benefit will be paid to the designated beneficiary. Term insurance might be compared to an automobile insurance policy. While the auto policy is in force, the insured enjoys the protection against loss from an auto accident. If no accident happens, no benefits are paid under the policy. At the end of the period covered by the policy, there is no refund of premiums paid.

At the end of the first policy term, the policy owner may elect to re-enter for another level premium period at favorable rates if the insured meets medical qualifications in effect at the time re-entry is requested. Re-entry is available at the end of each 10 years for the 10-year policy, at the end of each 20 years for the 20-year policy, and at the end of each 30 years for the 30-year policy, if the insured has not yet attained age 65 at the time of request. Re-entry will not be allowed before the end of year 10 for the 10-year policy, or year 20 for the 20-year policy, or year 30 for the 30-year policy, nor for insured that are ages 66-85 at the time of the re-entry request. The incentive for an insured to re-enter is that the premiums will typically be lower over the next level premium period than if the policy is simply allowed to renew.

Conversion to a universal or whole life product is allowed any time prior to 20 policy years or the insured's age 65, whichever is earlier (for policies issued at age 65, conversion is available only in the first year of issue). A policy may be converted to any permanent policy made available for conversion at the time of the request, subject to minimum and maximum face amounts. A partial conversion is allowed. The remaining term portion can either be canceled or remain in force subject to standard rules applicable to the policy and the minimum face amount requirements. Conversion is not allowed if premiums are currently being waived.

Universal Life Insurance combines the advantages of permanent protection and competitive cash value accumulation with the flexibility to adjust the time and amount of premiums, and the type of death benefit. This allows the product to fit the changing insurance needs of your client for a lifetime. UL differ from traditional whole life policies by separating the “expense element”,  “protection element” and the “cash value” element. Dividing the policy into these three components allows the insurance company to build a higher degree of flexibility into the policy.

Universal Life Insurance: Permanent form of Life coverage that offers a great deal of flexibility to the policy owner. Premium payments may be varied, death benefits may be changed, partial surrenders are allowed, and cash value may be accessed either through loans or direct withdrawals. Premium payments are deposited into an accumulation account where mortality charges and administrative charges are deducted monthly. Any remaining amount to the accumulation account is credited with interest. The policy's flexibility allows the policy owner to make, within IRS limits, contributions in excess of regular premium payments, which may substantially increase the policy's cash value; cease making premium payments for a period of time; change the death benefit options; and request partial surrenders.

However, if for some reason you're unable to get online or successfully complete the transactions , there are still ways to get your payment applied as soon as possible.

Paying by credit card is the fastest way to get a payment applied. If you are unable to reach us by phone and talk to us in person here’s how to get that information to us:

   1) Email – email us your name, policy number or ez pay account number along with your credit card number, exp. date, the three digit number on the back of your card along with your zip where you receive your credit card bill at,  to Phil@firmsolutions.net I will apply your payment as soon as I get in front of a computer.

   2) Fax – if you're uncomfortable emailing that information then fax the same information to 760-471-1371. The only disadvantage to that option is that I will not be able to apply the payment until I actually get back in the office.

   3) Leave a message on our voice mail! You won’t believe how many times I hear clients tell me that they are unable to get a hold of me or that they have been calling forever. The only problem is they never left a single message. If you leave a message I will call you back.

   4) Call 1-800-327-6377 and make your payment.

If you don’t have your policy number or monthly pay account number or just don’t know it, that’s OK. Though it is much easier if you do, just tell us your full name, address and which car or property you want to pay on. We are pretty good at finding you in the system and most likely know who you are. We can usually help you.
